ANDREW WEATHERALL '
BULLET CATCHER'S APPRENTICE'
(ROTTERS GOLF CLUB)
Since the late 80s, Andrew Weatherall has been the most unpredictable, challenging and downright inspiring individual in UK [dance] music, out to shake himself up as much as the punters. And, on his night, he can rock a party like no one else on the planet. It's characteristic that this is the first music that Weatherall has ever released under his own name, previously preferring the Sabers Of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen tage for his aural graffiti. This EP is an across-the-board blend ranging from vocal outings like the guitar-slashed Joy Division-based 'Feathers' to cool rockabilly guitar instrumental 'La Sirena'. 'You Can't Do Disco With A Strat' manages to work in Andrew's own vocal harmonies, girlie chorus and seedy sonic attack. He doesn't suffer remixers gladly but Soma-stars Repeat Repeat get the honors on this one, mashing up sub-bass with a dark dub-tech-no feel. The magnificent 'Edie 11' is a classic of the sort this man destroys dancefloors with, marrying malevolent acid-house groove-carnage with an unexpected acoustic guitar detour. Something of a milestone all round.
